Abstract: Highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) is currently the main therapy in the fight against HIV. It is usually able to suppress the amount of virus to a level that below the current limit of detection of standard assays. However, virus eradication from the host has not been achieved. Additionally, many patients experience transient episodes of viremia above the detection limit, termed viral blips, even after being on HAART for many years. We aim to develop a new mathematical model to explain this phenomenon, and our preliminary results show that the spatial heterogeneity and local fluctuations may result in the low viral load persistence and intermittent viral blips.
