Schrödinger’s Rainbow: The Renaissance in Quantum Optical Interferometry

Prof. Jonathan P. Dowling

Hearne Professor of Theoretical Physics
Co-Director, Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics
Department of Physics & Astronomy
Louisiana State University, USA

Abstract: Over the past 20 years bright sources of entangled photons have lead to a renaissance in quantum optical interferometry. These photon sources have been used to test the foundations of quantum mechanics and implement some of the spooky ideas associated with quantum entanglement such as quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography, quantum lithography, quantum computing logicgates, and sub-shot-noise optical interferometers. I will discuss some of these advances and the unification of optical quantum imaging, metrology, and information processing.

 About the Speaker:

Jonathan P. Dowling, the Hearne Professor of Theoretical Physics and Director of the Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics, Quantum Science and Technologies Group, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Prof. Dowling received his PhD in Mathematical Physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany; and Research Physicist at a US Government Laboratory in Huntsville, Alabama; before taking a position as Principle Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, before taking his current posts in Louisiana. Dowling has over 150 publications and eight US patents in the fields of nonlinear and quantum optics. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of Optical Society of America. He has been awarded the Willis E. Lamb Medal for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, the US Government Research and Development Achievement Award, and the NASA Space Act Award.
