Fast High-Order Methods for Time-Domain Wave Scattering Problems

Li-Lian Wang, Associate Professor

School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, Nanyang Technological University

Abstract: Wave propagation in unbounded domains arises from diverse applications. Intensive research has been devoted to frequency-domain simulation, e.g., the time-harmonic Helmholtz problems and Maxwell's equations. Here, we are interested in time-domain computation, which is known to be more flexible in capturing wide-band signals and modeling more general material inhomogeneity and nonlinearity. In this talk, we shall show how to use tools in complex analysis to analytically evaluate circular and spherical nonreflecting boundary conditions (NRBCs), and how to efficiently deal with time-space globalness of such boundary conditions. Fast spectral-Galerkin solvers together with stable time integration and techniques for handling general irregular scatterers will be introduced for the simulation. We intend to demonstrate that the interplay between analytic tools and accurate numerical means can lead to efficient methodologies for challenging simulations.

About the Speaker: Dr. Li-Lian Wang is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Before joined NTU, he held a Visiting Assistant Professor position at Purdue University in USA from 2003 to 2005. Prior to this, he obtained his PhD from Shanghai University in 2000, and worked as an Assistant Professor at Shanghai Normal University. His research interest lies in high-order methods including spectral and spectral-element methods and their applications. His recent interest also spans to PDE-based image processing. He has published more than 50 papers in top journals and has been one of the three authors of the Springer monograph on Spectral Methods: Algorithms, Analysis and Applications, published in 2011.
