Abstract: When the thickness of ultrathin metal films approaches the nanometer scale comparable to the quantum coherence length of their electrons, significant effects on structure stability and physical properties of the metal films emerge due to electron confinement and quantization of the allowed electronic states in the direction perpendicular to the film surface. These so-called quantum size effects (QSE) have been the focus of numerous experimental and theoretical studies. Among the metal thin films, Pb(111) films exhibit stronger QSE. The structure stability and many physical properties of Pb(111) film induced by QSE have been introduced in this talk.
