Abstract: It has been demonstrated that real spectra could be found in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians having parity-time (PT) symmetry. Based on the similar mathematical form of Schrodinger equation and Maxwell’s equations, the study of PT-symmetry problem in optical systems attracts increased attention. In optics, the PT symmetry condition is interpreted as a system with balanced loss and gain. Since the relevant parameters can be tuned straightforwardly, they offer a very convenient platform for the demonstration of physical picture of PT-symmetry problems. On the other hand, the concept of PT symmetry brings new insight into asymmetric propagation of light, which may lead to various applications.
