Abstract: The prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWFs) are a family of orthogonal bandlimited functions, originated from the investigation of time-frequency concentration problem. In this talk,  we will introduce the PSWF based spectral and spectral-element methods for solving partial differential equations(PDEs), and demonstrate the advantages over their polynomial counterparts. Moreover, we will introduce new generalizations of the PSWFs, and the corresponding spectral methods.
