Abstract: The Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a premier x-ray source facility in the USA conducting state-of-the art research in materials science, biology, chemistry, physics, and the environmental sciences. With the advent of high-resolution detectors and commensurately greater data volumes, scientists at the ALS are turning more and more to advanced computing techniques to achieve their scientific goals.
