Abstract: The basic physics of the optical properties of graphene is reviewed. How strain and geometrical constraints affect the absorption of light by the material are discussed.
Date & Time: September 20th, 2011 10:30 – 12:00 a.m.
Location: 606 Conference Room, BCSRC
Speaker Profile: Nuno Miguel M. R. Peres is currently an associate professor at the University of Minho, Portugal. He is also the coordinator of the theoretical research in the Graphene Research Centre, National University of Singapore for one year starting in July 2011. Since 2004, Prof. Nuno Peres has participated in the preliminary theoretical studies of the physics of graphene which involved direct collaborations with the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics Laureates Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov. He was recently awarded the most important Portuguese scientific prize, the 2011 Gulbenkain Science Prize.
