We will discuss qualitative properties of principle eigenvalues for second order elliptic operators with large drift. In the case of divergence free drift, we will propose certain functional associated with principal eigenfunctions of elliptic operator and its adjoint. The functional can be applied to establish the monotonicity of the principal eigenvalue, as a function of the drift amplitude. Other applications of such functional will also be discussed. 

楼元, 中国人民大学数学科学研究院院长, 美国俄亥俄州立大学数学教授。1988年获得北京大学学士学位, 1991年获得北京大学理学硕士学位, 1995年毕业于美国明尼苏达大学并获博士学位。1995年-1998年期间相继在美国的加州大学伯克利分校以及芝加哥大学从事博士后研究等工作。1998年3月起加入美国俄亥俄州立大学任教至今。楼元教授的研究兴趣为偏微分方程和生物数学。侧重偏微分方程理论研究及在生物中的应用, 包括物种竞争、物种入侵、物种进化、海洋生物学、疾病传播、人口基因学等方面, 是偏微分方程和生物数学领域的国际著名学者。
