Dear Colleagues and Friends,

This year, 2015, is the International Year of Light (IYL).  It is time to celebrate and widen the appreciation of the enormous contributions of optics to science, technology and culture.

The importance of light to the human perception of the world is profound. It is through vision that we receive our most complete source of information about the world. Light also plays a central role in human activities. On the most fundamental level, through photosynthesis, light is essential to the existence of life itself. Light has also been revolutionizing societies through its many applications to medicine, communications, entertainment, and culture.

It is not surprising that our fascination with light and our developments of optical technologies stretch back into prehistory. Optics continues to be a burgeoning and pervasive area of science and technology that has given rise to massive impacts on industries and societies. In the last century or so, the scientific study of optics and the development of optical technologies have dramatically exploded. Now, industries based on light are major economic drivers. Light-based technologies directly respond to the needs of humankind by providing access to information, promoting sustainable development, and inreasing societal health and well-being.

It is a great pleasure for us to announce that “The 2nd International Workshop on Frontiers in Quantum Optics and Quantum Information: Celebration of the International Year of Light” will be held in Beijing from April 26 to 28, 2015.  The workshop is organized by Beijing Computational Science Research Center (CSRC).

The workshop should allow free interactions among experts from different research fields, and the exchange of ideas between experimentalists and theorists. Please apply to the workshop by completing the registration. You may contact the workshop secretary, Ms. Yuan GAO, at QOQI2015@csrc.ac.cn for further information.

We look forward to seeing you in this exciting workshop!
